AICD piece on AI in Australia: how are we tracking?

Our founder, Jeroen van Dalen, has published an article with the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) on AI adoption across Australian organisations. It draws on AITAI’s analysis of nearly 400,000 pages of annual reports from 400+ companies across five countries (FY2021–FY2025). A few numbers that stood out:

→ Companies with no AI mention fell from 52% to 18%
→ Routine or embedded use rose from 20% to 47%
→ About one in five reports now cite a realised AI result with a hard number attached, up from 3%

A few years ago, AI was something to keep an eye on, a risk to manage, or an opportunity in the air. Since ChatGPT arrived at the end of 2022, that has changed fast. But while Australian companies have matured rapidly, they haven’t kept pace with the world leaders.

The key takeaway: adopting AI only matters if it produces outcomes. Boards and leaders have a role in shaping where AI is used, who benefits, what stays under human control, and whether the gains reach workers, customers and the wider community.
